poem moment

Before I got my eye put out

August 16, 2018

In this poem moment, Emily Dickinson explores the feelings of loss and caution that might be felt by someone who has lost vision in one eye and fears losing sight altogether. Written in 1862, the poem is strangely prophetic of how Emily herself felt when undergoing treatment for eye problems in 1864 and 1865. She was confined to dark rooms and forbidden to read or write.
